I was born into a story that spans a millennium, but I was forged in the arena of a multi-million euro crisis. Legacy, I learned, is not a gift to be enjoyed; it is a discipline to be mastered.
In 2014, the abstract theory of family governance became my immediate reality. I witnessed how centuries of continuity – built on land, forestry, and the stewardship of historic estates – can vanish when trust is fragile and systems are weak. This experience became the foundation for The Antifragile Family®, where I develop leadership frameworks to help families transform friction into a source of strength.

Active Stewardship
Today, I navigate the intersection of thousand-year-old tradition and future-facing innovation. As the steward of Burg Hardegg – a medieval stronghold in Lower Austria – I manage the preservation of cultural heritage through tourism and film.
The history of the fortress is a physical case study in antifragility. Originally acquired by my ancestors, the Princes of Khevenhüller-Metsch, as part of a larger estate package, it was the favorite retreat of Johann Carl Khevenhüller-Metsch. A man of action and vision, he chose to rebuild the castle from its ruins during the era of Historicism, transforming decay into a landmark of resilience.
Though the lineage of the Lower Austrian line continued through my family as the Counts Pilati von Thassul zu Daxberg, the mission remains unchanged: we do not just preserve the past; we build upon it.
Managing Continuity
Beyond the castle walls, I oversee our family portfolio, managing a global real estate footprint and strategic venture capital investments with a primary focus on Deep Tech.
With a family history traceable across ten centuries and a responsibility for land ownership spanning eight hundred years, I do not think in quarters, but in generations. I manage continuity in a world designed for decay.
The Structural Foundation
THE ATHLETE: As a former player for the Austrian National Rugby 7s Team, I adopted the "support line" mentality. Rugby teaches you that you will get hit, and you will fall. The only variable you control is how fast you get back up to support your team. When a crisis hits, I don’t step back. I step in.
THE ENGINEER: Educated in English boarding schools and trained in Mechanical Engineering, I view family systems through a structural lens. I identify the stress points in the machinery of legacy to ensure the architecture is built to withstand friction and grow stronger under pressure.
