Meet Octavian Pilati

a dynamic speaker, author, and driven entrepreneur with a passion for sharing his hard-earned wisdom and experiences in the realms of family businesses.

Born into a family with an aristocratic heritage spanning over a millennium, Octavian gained intriguing insights into family dynamics from an early age. However, it was his active involvement in his family‘s business over the past decade that profoundly shaped his perspective.

In the pivotal year of 2014, Octavian's world was turned upside down. While pursuing his education as a mechanical engineer, a devastating fraud case struck the family business like a lightning bolt, threatening its very existence. With nearly three centuries of history in the tourism and forestry sectors, the family business was an integral part of his family’s identity. Just months before, discussions about succession had been commonplace.

At the tender age of 25, Octavian took on a substantial role in the crisis management of the family business, driven by an unwavering determination to preserve the legacy of his family.

Regrettably, not all stories have a happy ending. While not all was lost financially, the three years of relentless struggle left the family as a whole, as well as its individual members, deeply shattered. Octavian embarked on a quest for answers, seeking to understand how the crisis and its far-reaching repercussions could have been prevented. He immersed himself in extensive research, delving into books, research papers, and conversations with experts and fellow family business members.

In 2019, Octavian's cousin extended an invitation that would prove pivotal—a ticket to his first family business conference. There, Octavian recognized the valuable insights he could offer to other business families facing similar challenges.

Since then, Octavian has been a speaker at several family business conferences, including prestigious events hosted by Prestel & Partner and Campden Wealth and has also contributed articles to “Horizons Family Office & Investor Magazine”. Furthermore, in 2022 and 2023, he made contributions to university courses at Harvard Business School, where his family's business crisis served as a compelling case study.

Octavian is an active participant in Family Hippocampus, an organization passionately dedicated to improving the structural foundations of family businesses.

Octavian specializes in succession planning, fraud prevention, crisis management, conflict resolution, and NextGen education.
